WHAT IS CRANIOSACRAL WORK?

Craniosacral Work is a gentle, hands-on approach that releases tension deep in the body to relieve pain and dysfunction and improve whole-body health and performance.

As the practitioner, I listen to the bones, membranes, cerebral spinal fluid and emotional body. I use my judgement based on what my client directly asks for, along with an intuitive reading, to decide where to apply a precise and gentle touch.

Imbalances in the fluid and membranes surrounding and protecting the brain and spinal cord are cleared with the intentional and skilled holds I apply. When cerebral spinal fluid is not obstructed, the body has the opportunity to restore balance. The natural rhythm of the fluid is oceanic in its ebb and flow. Sutherland (grandfather of craniosacral work) calls it “the breath of life”. I work with my clients to help them release physical and emotional blockages.

Craniosacral Work evolved out of Cranial Osteopathy, a specialization of the osteopathic profession that was introduced to the world in the 1930s by an American osteopath and visionary called William Garner Sutherland.

Craniosacral work has traditionally focused on the 22 bones that make up the human head, the vertebra and sacrum, and also on the brain, the central nervous system, the cerebrospinal fluid and the system of membranes inside the cranium and spinal column.

Craniosacral therapists often focus upon optimizing the position, fluid movement ('wave') and energy (piezolelectric charge and chi) of these parts of the craniosacral system. Or they may focus on bringing the craniosacral system back to balance in the central line of the body, called 'midline.' Some schools focus on differing wave states, tides, and opening to the arrival of stillness.

WHAT TO EXPECT

During a craniosacral session, my focus is on my client and what they need to get the best healing. I always feel privileged to help facilitate healing of this depth. I listen to what my client would like from the session and customize my work to best meet them.

My client lies on a massage table dressed comfortably. I apply a gentle touch (about the weight of a dime) to the craniosacral system. I use my knowledge of the craniosacral system anatomy, techniques and intuition to guide me through the healing. I have complete trust in the craniosacral system and its ability heal and balance the body.

After your session you should allow time for integration and rest.

Even after more then 20 years of doing this work, I am still awed by the amazing magnitude of what is possible in one session.
